Using an old blender, colander and construction paper, you can make a beautiful and unusual paper pulp painting. Because it is free-form, artistic talent is not required, just an eye for attractive color and design. Children can also try their hand at this craft, with adult supervision of course. Follow these simple instructions and get started on your masterpiece.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Assemble the drying frame before you begin the paper pulp painting. Staple a piece of fiberglass window screen to a wooden picture frame. Use a frame you already have or purchase an inexpensive new one. Set aside.
Step2
Tear different colors of construction paper into small pieces and place in separate disposable plastic containers--clean sour cream or butter containers are ideal.
Step3
Work with one color of paper at a time. Put into an old blender that you have set aside for crafting only. Add just enough water to cover. Blend thoroughly. Drain into an old colander set over a plastic bin to catch excess water. Place pulp back into the disposable plastic container. Repeat with each color, rinsing the colander and blender thoroughly after each use.
Step4
Place the screen frame over a thick layer of newsprint to catch draining water. Free form the design by applying the paper pulp to the screen. Flatten slightly, but an irregular surface is part of the appeal of this art form. Add colors one at a time and let them blend together at the seams. Use a slightly damp sponge to mash down the pulp. Try just to flatten the pulp and not push it through the screen.
Step5
Place polyester organza over the paper pulp on the screen. Rub the sponge gently over the material removing more water. Place a fan on low speed next to the frame. Allow to dry overnight. Remove the organza. With a butter knife lift up one corner of the dried painting. Gently remove from the frame and lay on a flat surface. Allow to dry thoroughly at this point.
Step6
Trim the edges or leave irregular. Place white paper over the top and iron on low heat to flatten, if needed. Mount on mat board using double sided tape. Frame as desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is a messy process, so adequately protect all surfaces with newsprint. Towels might become permanently stained.
  • Don't drain the colander over a sink. Some of the pulp might drip through and clog the drain.
