If you’re living in an apartment with strict lease guidelines or in new construction, decorating is challenging when holes can’t be put in the walls. There are solutions to this dilemma, however. Create a “lean-to” decorating scheme wherever possible using wall art, mirrors and other collections.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • wall art
  • vases
  • jars
  • candles
  • baskets
  • linens
  • other decorative items
  1. Step 1
Make a display of books, knick-knacks and candles.

In the living room, create a table-scape using a variety of items; including a mirror leaned on to the wall. Surround it with plants, candles, and photographs. Hang chimes or other decorative hanging items from the corner of the mirror.

  2. Step 2
Find wall art of framed images reflecting the season or theme of the room.

In the kitchen, create a table scape using a breadbasket, a piece of wall art, some jars and a vase.

  3. Step 3
Antique linens add to the look and feel of the presentation.

If you have a lip above the stairwell, this is a good opportunity to add a couple of pieces of linen and a piece of wall art. Be sure the area is wide enough and sturdy enough to support this type of decorating.

  4. Step 4
Be sure to rest pieces on towels to prevent slipping.

In the bathroom, use the top of the toilet tank to add a piece of wall art and a basket full of decorated, seasonally themed items. If the bathroom is off the kitchen, the theme will carry from the centerpiece of the kitchen table into this room.

Tips & Warnings
  • use plants whenever possible
  • use a mix of framed art and photographs whenever possible
  • be sure the mirror, framed art or photograph is properly positioned on the table or surface so it doesn’t fall over at any time
  • don’t be afraid to mix colors, textures and other unusual elements into the decorating scheme

on 10/18/2007 The idea for the stairwell is a great one! Some of the other things look a little cluttery, though.

on 10/18/2007 I can't put any holes in the walls of our home until the builders do the final inspection . . . whenever that is. So, I decided to use what I want, still, in a new way. :)
