Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Think safety first. Use a log splitter on level ground. Secure the log splitter so that it can't move. Always wear safety glasses and gloves while using a log splitter.
Step2
Know that there is more than one kind of log splitter. One type is a hydraulic log splitter that runs with a gas-operated engine.
Step3
Check the engine for gas and oil before you start to use a log splitter. Turn the switch on. Crank the engine. This will activate the hydraulic pump that is operated by pressure.
Step4
Look for the welded wedge that you'll see on one end of the log splitter. Put the log you are splitting against the wedge. You'll see an arm or a button to activate the piston which pushes the log against the wedge. Push the button or pull the arm until the log is completely split. Then, release. Repeat this process until the log is split to the size you want.
Step5
Consider the use of another kind of log splitter. This one is manual. This log splitter has a hydraulic jack attached to one end with a welded wedge on the other end.
Step6
Tighten the screw on the hydraulic jack. This allows you to pump the arm and move the cylinder. Put your log in the splitter; pump until the log is split. Release the screw on the jack so you can push the cylinder back down in place. Re-tighten the screw. Repeat the process.
