Revitalizing old, worn wood shingles is a tough project, but the result is very rewarding. You can breathe new life into aged shingles with some primer, paint and a lot of prep work. Here is how to paint wood shingles properly for a long-lasting, great-looking effect.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Latex-based primer
  • Latex-based exterior paint
  • Nylon or polyester bristle brushes

    Prep Work

  1. Step 1

Determine whether the shingles on your home have been stained before. If they have, you will need to re-stain with an oil-based penetrating stain rather than paint.

  2. Step 2

Purchase enough latex-based primer and exterior paint to cover your house. Dark, matte paint is best for shingles, particularly if your trim is light colored and glossy. It will provide a nice contrast and hide imperfections.

  3. Step 3

Pressure wash the shingles carefully to remove all dirt and debris. Do not use too much power; you just need to soak and rinse. Be extra careful with shingles that are old and worn to prevent damaging the wood.

  4. Step 4

Scrape off excess paint gently and carefully as needed. Unless the shingles have been painted several times before, you'll only need to spot-scrape. If the paint on your shingles is peeling, you'll have to scrape all of the paint off before re-painting, or run the risk or more peeling later on.

  5. Prime and Paint

  6. Step 1

    Stir the primer well.

  7. Step 2

Dip your paint brush into the primer about halfway up the bristles. Wipe the underside of the brush on the edge of the paint can to remove excess paint.

  8. Step 3

Start on the right side of the house first if you're right handed, the left side if you're left handed.

  9. Step 4

Paint around the perimeter or edge of each shingle first, getting primer into all the cracks and crevices.

  10. Step 5

Dip your paint brush back into the paint can and wipe the underside of the brush.

  11. Step 6

Paint the inner area of each shingle in an up-and-down motion, following the grain of the wood.

  12. Step 7

Apply a bit of pressure as you paint for maximum coverage.

  13. Step 8

Wipe up any drips before they dry.

  14. Step 9

Repeat with each side of the house.

  15. Step 10

Allow to dry for the amount of time recommended on the primer can.

  16. Step 11

Repeat steps 1-9 with a coat of latex-based exterior paint. If needed, apply a second coat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be extremely careful when scraping old paint due to the risk of exposure to lead. If it's possible that the paint on the shingles contains lead, it's best to have the shingles professionally scraped. If you're going to do it yourself, cover the ground underneath you while you scrape to ensure that lead doesn't get into the soil. Wear protective gloves and a mask.
