Some people think its just the abdominal machines, this isn't true You do need to work those abdominals effectively. However, if they are covered by a layer of a fat, you won't see the results of your hard work.
Recommended 30-60 minutes of running, jogging, playing a sport, jump rope, anything that can get your blood pumping fast and flowing through your body.

Eat A Clean Diet
Lower your body fat levels to see your abs, a person wont see any visible abdominal muscles, if they're constantly eating a junk food diet. Junk food diet includes pizza, donuts,McDonald's for lunch.
Eat constantly with small meals with a combination of protein, fat, and carbs at each meal. Stick to lean protein sources such as chicken, tuna, egg whites, and lean ground turkey.
You want to loose fat, not starve to death.

Put some effort into performing abdominal exercises
Use proper form and focus on quality over quantity.
Perform 200 crunches done correctly with great form over 400 or 600 done with poor form.

Drink Water
If your body is dehydrated, it will retain water, giving you a "smoother" look. Make sure you are well hydrated to avoid water retention.
