You need to have your trailer's tires removed from the rim. Removing a semi truck tire from the rim is no easy task. It requires special tools, specialized equipment, safety instruction and training. Here are the basics of getting a semi truck tire off its rim.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tire derimmer
  1. Step 1

Purchase a tire derimmer for semi truck tires. You can find these at Eagle International and other heavy equipment retailers (see Resources below). Select a portable tire derimmer unit.

  2. Step 2

Have the necessary hauling and powering equipment on hand. A semi truck tire derimmer can weigh about 5 thousand pounds, so be sure you have the equipment to move and to power the tire derimmer.

  3. Step 3

Roll the tire into position. On some tire derimmers, there is no need to lift the tire and rim into place, you just roll it on.

  4. Step 4

Use the clamping mechanism to clamp the tire into place, which is held by the first cylinder. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions while doing this to insure you do not damage the rim or cause bodily injury to yourself or others.

  5. Step 5

Activate the second cylinder to push the tire out of the rim. Now clean the rim thoroughly and check for any damage. You need to do this before trying to mount another tire.

Tips & Warnings
  • A tire derimmer is a dangerous piece of equipment. Be sure you have adequate safety training and supervised experience before attempting to use it.
