Choosing games for kids is a never ending process. As kids grow so do their tastes and interests. Kid's games come in many shapes, sizes and types. Video games, board games and card games all have different levels and subject matters. Choose games for your kids that inspire learning and creativity.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider the ages of your children. Choose games that fit easily into their age and skill level.

  2. Step 2

Purchase games you've learned about from other parents. This is a great way to ensure that your kids will like the game as well.

  3. Step 3

Provide variety in the types of games you choose. Allow kids time to play computer games, video games and board games.

  4. Step 4

Limit the amount of time spent in front of the computer or with electronic games. Board games provide a wealth of learning opportunities and fun, while encouraging interaction with other players.

  5. Step 5

Select games that reinforce learning. Math games, word games, problem solving games and games that require fine motor skills help enhance classroom activities. The Mensa Society licenses a series of games that challenge young minds (more mature minds, too, for that matter).

  6. Step 6

Stay away from games that promote violence, sex, illegal drugs or gang activity. Don't rely solely on the parental rating system for video games. Preview any video games that your child wants to play.

  7. Step 7

Play games with your kids and you'll get a better sense of what they respond to and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Look for resources on the Internet that review games. This is an especially good tool for video games and computer software.
  • Purchase new games when the old ones just aren't fun anymore. If you've got a game in the closet the kids have outgrown, look for something that is more age appropriate.
  • Challenge your kids with more sophisticated games as they grow. Introduce them to chess, backgammon, cribbage and other games adults enjoy.
