After learning to dance flamenco, it may seem that choosing a costume to dance in is a piece of cake. However, dressing for a flamenco dancing performance has its own set of traditions and trends.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a cut and style. From a mermaid style skirt to one more flowing, there are many to choose from. Even males have lots of options when picking a costume. Consider whether you'd like a traditional or modern dress or suit. Think of the routine you are performing and whether it calls for a sombre dress or a festive one.

  2. Step 2

Shop around. There are many places online that offer flamenco dance costumes. On the other hand, you can find traditional dressmakers who will make clothing to your specifications.

  3. Step 3

Pick your accessories. Depending on the dance you are performing, you'll need fans, a manila shawl, castanets or even flowers. Make sure these items match the dress and your partner's costume. The colors need to match perfectly.

  4. Step 4

Buy shoes that reflect the type of dance you plan to do. Flamenco shoes can be incredibly expensive and some are hand made. Others are more basic and come a bit cheaper. If you're dressing traditionally, your shoes should be a traditional type to match. The same goes for more modern outfits.

  5. Step 5

Practice in your flamenco dance costume. No matter how often you practice, it's hard to know exactly how easy it is to move in an ensemble; so it is best to practice several times with your costume fully assembled and test how well it flows and restricts. Preparing ahead of time will make for a seamless performance.

Tips & Warnings
  • When looking for accessories, bear in mind that though many dances do not require a manila, ornamental versions are popular.
