Use a hand-screw clamp when you do not want to mar the surface of the object you are clamping or when you are working with odd shapes. Choose a hand-screw clamp when working with fabric, wood and plastic.

Select the correct hand-screw clamp for your project. Hand-screw clamps are available in jaw lengths ranging from four to 24 inches. The reach of a hand-screw clamp ranges from two to 12 inches. Select the clamp that opens wide enough and is deep enough to hold your project.

Open the jaws of your hand-screw clamp and position it on either side of the object you want to clamp. Keep the clamp and object parallel.

Use both of your hands to tighten each of the clamp's screws. Apply equal pressure to both screws. Keep the vise jaws parallel to the edges of the clamped object to ensure it is held equally by both wooden jaws of the clamp.

Look at the clamped project. It needs to form a square, not a triangle. Try to clamp the project again if the project is not square. Make allowances for uneven work surfaces.

Allow glue to dry or finish the work on your project. When finished, release the screws and remove the hand-screw clamp. Oil the clamp lightly before storing it.
