How to Set the Twist in Yarn

Once you have yarn completely spun it is time to set the twist in the yarn. This is a simple process that ensures that the yarn won't unravel once it is taken off the drop spindle or spinning wheel bobbin. Once the twist is set and the yarn has dried completely, it is ready to be used in the next craft project.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bath Tub or Sink
  • Hanger
Step1
Remove the yarn from the drop spindle or spinning wheel and wind it into a skein. Make sure to secure the yarn to make sure that it doesn't become tangled while the twist is being set.
Step2
Fill a sink or bathtub with a few inches of lukewarm water. Make sure that the yarn will be completely covered once it is in the water.
Step3
Place the yarn in the water. Gently push it down in the water until it is completely soaked. Let the yarn soak in the water for five to ten minutes or until all the yarn is completely saturated.
Step4
Remove the yarn from the water. Gently squeeze the yarn to remove excess water. Do not wring the yarn because that could cause the fiber to felt.
Step5
Hang the yarn up to dry on a hanger or drying rack. Let it hand until it is completely dry. This may take a few hours or days depending on the weight of the yarn.
Step6
When the yarn is completely dried, it is ready to use in any craft project.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the yarn is curling up badly you can gently stretch it out while the twist is being set. Wet and hang the yarn to dry and hang a weight from the bottom of the yarn to gently pull the yarn while it is drying. A can works perfectly for this.
