How to Work With Text in Microsoft Publisher

Microsoft Publisher is desktop publishing software that's part of the Microsoft Office suite. Working with text is one of the most demanding set of features in desktop publishing software. Here are some of the most useful command features of Microsoft Publisher to help you format and work with text.

      Align text within a text box. Select the paragraphs you want to change. Go to the Format menu, select Paragraph, and then choose the Indents and Spacing tab. Under General, in the Alignment list, click the type of alignment you want.

      Fit text in a shape. Right-click the shape that contains the text that doesn't fit. In the shortcut menu that pops up, choose Format AutoShape. In the Format AutoShape dialog box, click the Text Box tab. Select the option you want under Text Autofitting.

      Make text flow vertically within a text box or AutoShape. Select the text that you want to display vertically. On the Format menu, click Text Box or AutoShape and then select the Text Box tab. Select the "Rotate text within AutoShape by 90°" check box.

      Fit text in a text box automatically. Click anywhere in the text. From the Format menu, go to AutoFit Text. Choose "Shrink Text On Overflow" to reduce the point size until no text is overflowing. Pick "Best Fit" to automatically reduce or expand the text when you resize the text box.

      Scale the width of text characters. Select the text characters you want to change. From the Format menu, choose Character Spacing. Under Scaling, enter the percentage that you want to shrink or stretch your text. You'll see an example in the Sample box at the bottom of the dialog box.
