You can grow a new carrot plant from the tip of a carrot, which is a fun and interesting science experiment for kids. Kids can see how a plant develops right before their eyes right out of the vegetable. Follow these steps to grow a carrot plant.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Carrot
  • Knife
  • Saucer
  • Water
  • Notebook
  1. Step 1

Choose a healthy-looking carrot to use for this project.

  2. Step 2

Cut off the top of the carrot about 1 inch from the stalk with a sharp knife. If there are any leaves on the carrot, cut them off close to the base.

  3. Step 3

Place the cut end of the carrot with the cut edge down onto a saucer, or on the bottom piece of a small clay pot. Add enough water to cover about half of the carrot piece.

  4. Step 4

Cover the saucer with a clear glass cup or clear plastic cup, which holds in the moisture. Place the saucer in a window that gets a good amount of light per day.

  5. Step 5

Remove the glass or plastic cup when you notice that the leaves on the carrot are beginning to grow.

  6. Step 6

Watch as your carrot develops. Observe the root growth, the stalk growth and the leaf growth every day for about six days.

Tips & Warnings
  • If doing this as a science experiment, measure the carrot daily and record the growth and any changes that you see in a log. At the end of the six days, write out what you learned from this experiment.
  • Children should not cut the carrot with a knife unless accompanied by an adult.
