1
Choose a healthy-looking carrot to use for this project.
-
2
Cut off the top of the carrot about 1 inch from the stalk with a sharp knife. If there are any leaves on the carrot, cut them off close to the base.
-
3
Place the cut end of the carrot with the cut edge down onto a saucer, or on the bottom piece of a small clay pot. Add enough water to cover about half of the carrot piece.
-
4
Cover the saucer with a clear glass cup or clear plastic cup, which holds in the moisture. Place the saucer in a window that gets a good amount of light per day.
-
5
Remove the glass or plastic cup when you notice that the leaves on the carrot are beginning to grow.
-
6
Watch as your carrot develops. Observe the root growth, the stalk growth and the leaf growth every day for about six days.

Tips & Warnings
If doing this as a science experiment, measure the carrot daily and record the growth and any changes that you see in a log. At the end of the six days, write out what you learned from this experiment.
Children should not cut the carrot with a knife unless accompanied by an adult.
