Step 1
Purchase a replacement ballcock assembly for your toilet at a hardware store. Bring the broken assembly to compare when buying a new one. There are plastic or metal assemblies that work on any toilet. The plastic does not corrode, but is not as strong as the metal.

Turn the water shutoff valve to the "off" position before working on the toilet. Remove the valve plunger. Inspect the washers for defects and replace them accordingly.

Flush the toilet to get all of the water out. Use a screw driver to unscrew the float arm from the ballcock assembly. Remove the refill tube from the overflow tube. Loosen the coupling nut located on the bottom of the tank where the water inlet pipe enters the tank. Grip the nut above the coupling nut with a wrench while using another wrench to grip the base of the ballcock assembly inside the toilet tank.

Step 4
Unscrew the nut under the tank and remove the ballcock assembly. Place the new ballcock assembly in the hole in the tank. Tighten the nut on the outside, keeping the washers in place. Don't overtighten the nut. Replace the coupling nut, water inlet pipe, float arm and refill tube in the toilet.

Step 5
Check for leaks at all connections after turning the water back on to the toilet. Make sure the float does not rub anywhere when flushing.
