Playing Native American drums is spiritual as well as musical. Native American drumming is a very personal experience. The Native American drum and the drummer become united, as the song and the player reach out across the sky. A drummer must play Native American drums with their heart and soul.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Learn to play Native American drums by listening to Native American music. There are many great Native American music groups as well as recordings of traditional songs. Listen to the drum and get a feel for the spiritual connection the drummer makes with the music. The drum is the heartbeat of Native American music. Percussionists often pick up the beat by playing along with recordings.
Step2
Take drum lessons and learn proper rhythm techniques. Even an accomplished drummer can improve greatly with expert instruction. Visit local music stores and ask about drum lessons. Look for a bulletin board as well, as music stores are the best places to find information concerning local performances.
Step3
Attend a Powwow. The various Native American tribes hold ceremonies throughout America. The Powwow is a joyous celebration of Native American culture and a great way for a non-Native American to experience Native culture. During breaks, ask the Powwow drummers for some tips and to see their drums. Do not touch the drum without a direct invitation. Musicians are happy to share their talents, and Powwow drummers are exceptionally skilled.
Step4
Form a drum circle. The popularity of drum circles soared in the late 1970s. The drum circle is a way for skilled drummers and beginners to share their love of drums. Many of the drum circle participants use Native American or traditional African drums. Drummers take turns, just as in a traditional Native American Powwow.
Step5
Remember to practice on several drums. The selection of the drum is critical to making the proper contact with the spirit of the music. Native American drummers should treat their instrument with great reverence.
