If one of the keys on your laptop stops functioning, typing even a simple email message becomes an exercise in frustration. Before you haul your laptop into a computer repair store, try and find a replacement laptop key instead.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit your laptop manufacturer's website and search for your laptop's model.

  2. Step 2

Search for the key type and the specific laptop key you need to purchase.

  3. Step 3

Place an order for the replacement laptop key using the website's online form.

  4. Step 4

Head to the LaptopKeys website to order replacement keys for many manufacturers' notebooks and laptop computers.

  5. Step 5

Check out online auctions such as eBay, where you can locate replacement laptop keys for many different models, including older laptops whose replacement parts are more difficult to find.

Tips & Warnings
  • Spilled beverages, food particles, dust, and hair contamination will all cause laptop keys to stick and eventually to cease working altogether. Try to keep your laptop and the desk area surrounding it as clean as possible.
  • Blowing compressed air in between the keys of your laptop might dislodge a potential blockage that's preventing a certain laptop key from working.
  • Some replacement laptop keys are hard to find, and as a result you may need to replace the entire keyboard.
  • Keep in mind that when you purchase a laptop key from a company other than your laptop's manufacturer, you are likely purchasing a refurbished key, rather than a new one. However, these keys are often in top-notch condition and should function just as a new replacement key would.

on 9/29/2009 I had a similar problem with one of my laptop keys and I searched for a reliable place to get it fixed. I came across laptopkey.com and ordered my key from them. The best part is they have online tutorials on how to replace your keys at home. I did it all by myself!

on 8/20/2009 Manufacturer do not sell individual keys, HP wanted me to send in my laptop and charge me $130 for a new keyboard! NO thanks! I bought a key from the guys from individualkeys.com for $4.99, much better than $130 and be out of a laptop for a week. Hope this helps, thanks
