An easy way to get your kids involved with Christmas decorating is to let them make their own ornaments. These stained glass candy ornaments are cute, fun and easy to make in an afternoon. Using items you have on hand and purchased candy, follow these steps to complete this project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Let the kids pick out metal cookie cutters for their ornaments. Stars, hearts and angels are good, but they can use any design that appeals to them. Plastic cookie cutters cannot be used for this project because they melt in the oven.

  2. Step 2

Line the bottom and up the sides of the cookie cutters with aluminum foil. Make sure the bottom lays flat with no creases. Lightly spray a cookie sheet and the insides of the cutters with oil. Place them slightly apart on the cookie sheet.

  3. Step 3

Unwrap the hard candy and place in a single layer inside each cookie cutter. For a solid color ornament, use a layer of one color candy. For a stained glass effect, crush several colors, mix, and place in a single layer. The colors will blend when the candy melts.

  4. Step 4

Bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes until the candy melts.

  5. Step 5

Use oven mitts to remove the cookie sheet from the oven. Immediately add candy sprinkles on the top of each Christmas ornament, if desired.

  6. Step 6

Cool 2 minutes, then use a toothpick to carefully poke a hole through the top of each ornament.

  7. Step 7

Cool completely. Peel off the foil and carefully remove each ornament from the foil. Hang with a narrow ribbon and let the kids admire their handiwork.

Tips & Warnings
  • Supervise your kids during the making of the Christmas ornaments, especially when taking the cookie sheet out of the oven. Also it is imperative to let the hot candy cool completely to avoid burns.
