How to Install a Periscope Dryer Vent Duct

Kenneth Crawford

Periscope dryer vent ducts allow you to vent the dryer without flexible ductwork. The periscope dryer vent duct is ideal for tight place as well. It is a solid vent duct that extends as necessary to connect the dryer exhaust to the outside vent, without worrying about kinks like you would with a flex duct. Installing a periscope dryer vent duct is similar to installing a flex duct. It is necessary to use a long-handle screwdriver to reach the securing screws once the dryer is back in its working position.

  1. Unplug the dryer power cord from the outlet. Turn off the gas supply valve, if you have a gas dryer. Slide the dryer away from the rear wall so you can access the dryer ductwork. If you have a gas dryer, make sure you do not overextend the gas flex line.

  2. Loosen the clamps securing the flexible vent duct to the back of the dryer and the outside dryer vent with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the flexible duct from the dryer and outside vent.

  3. Place one vent clamp over one end of the periscope dryer vent duct. Position the end of the vent duct over the dryer exhaust port. Rotate the clamp so that the tightening screw is pointing in a direction that is readily accessible when the dryer is against the wall. Tighten the screw with the Phillips-head screwdriver just enough to hold the vent duct onto the dryer.

  4. Slide the other vent clamp over the opposite end of the vent duct. Extend the periscope dryer vent duct until it lines up with the outside vent pipe. Push the dryer against the wall as you are lining up the end of the vent duct.

  5. Secure the periscope dryer vent duct to the outside dryer vent pipe with the clamp, tightening the clamp screw securely. Tighten the clamp screw at the dryer exhaust connection. Plug the dryer power cord into the outlet. Turn the gas valve back on to supply gas to the dryer, if you have a gas unit.
