How to Replace Lift Cords on Blinds

You should replace the lift cord on your blinds as soon as you notice that the cord is wearing out. All you need is the equipment and these instructions to complete the task.

Things You'll Need

  • New lift cord
  • Hot glue gun
  • Electrical tape
  • Remove the blinds from the window. Take off the brackets and slide out the blinds.

  • Pull the blinds tightly together once you have removed them from the window.

  • Snip the cord. If it is frayed, cut it just above the fray. Otherwise, leave several inches of cord.

  • Attach the new cord to the old cord with a glue gun, and then wrap the cord in electrical tape. An alternative is to remove the entire old cord, hold the blinds together and put the new cord through the blinds with a large needle.

  • Hang the blinds by sliding them back into the brackets. If you used the hot glue gun technique, pull the cord through and then detach the old string. You can place a pull on the bottom.

  • Test out your blinds to make sure your cord has been properly fitted through the slits.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes it is less expensive if you just purchase a new blind instead of fixing the old one. This is especially applicable if you are repairing a mini-blind.
