Strip quilting, or strip piecing, is a quick and easy sewing technique used in quilting. You no longer have to cut each square out individually for quilt patterns like the Irish Chain. Instead, long strips of fabric are sewn together in a pattern.

From Quick Guide: Quilting Projects
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 fabric pieces
  • Pins
  • Iron
  • Cutting mat
  • Rotary cutter
  • Rotary ruler
  1. Step 1

Cut fabric into strips. Place the folded fabric on the cutting mat. Put the ruler over the main part of the fabric to keep from cutting into it. You must hold the ruler tight to keep it from moving while you cut away the uneven edges.

  2. Step 2

Turn the fabric so the rotary ruler only covers the section of fabric you want. Use either the markings on the ruler or those on the mat to measure the fabric. Carefully, cut a 1-inch strip. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 with the remaining two fabric pieces, creating strips "A," "B" and "C" for this example.

  3. Step 3

Place your strip "A" on top of strip "B", right sides together. Pin the top edge together to prevent the fabric from stretching while you sew.

  4. Step 4

Use a 1/4-inch seam allowance to sew along the top edge. With your iron, press the seam to one side.

  5. Step 5

Next, place strip "C" on top of the strip "B," right sides together. Pin and sew strips together. Press the seam to one side. All three strips are now together.

  6. Step 6

Lay your fabric on the cutting mat. Place your rotary ruler to line up with the 1" mark with the left side of the fabric.

  7. Step 7

With your rotary cutter, slice a 1inch strip. Now you have three 1 inch squares sewn together.

Tips & Warnings
  • Rotary cutters are very sharp. Always cut away from your body.
