How to Visit the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, houses one of the finest and most extensive of Japanese and Oriental 20th-century art. It also hosts retrospectives and special exhibitions of renowned collections of the great masters from European and worldwide painting and sculpture.

Get to the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo

1. Know whether you're headed for the main building, which houses the art museum, or to the Crafts Gallery. Directions to access each of two separate buildings differ slightly, depending on where you're coming from.
2. Visit the main building of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo by taking the Tozai Line of the Tokyo subway to Takebashi station. The museum is just a few minutes' walk from the station.
3. Visit the Crafts Gallery by taking either the Tozai, Hanzomon or Toei Shinjuku Line of the Tokyo subway to Kudanshita station. You can also reach the Crafts Gallery from Takebashi station as in Step 2, though the walk is slightly longer.

4. Learn the opening hours for the various wings of the museum. The main gallery remains open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Hours are extended until 8 p.m. on Fridays. The entire museum complex is closed every Monday of the year.
5. Access the collections at the museum libraries from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. for the main gallery library, and 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. for the Crafts Gallery library. Both libraries are closed on Sundays, and other restrictions on their use may be in place. Inquire ahead of time if you wish to have specific questions answered.
6. Visit the National Film Center if you're a movie buff. As part of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, special screenings and programs are a regular feature of the film center.
7. Take a guided tour, or rent an audio guide from the museum upon entry. The treasures found in the museum are even more fascinating when you have an expert guide to put them in context!

Tips & Warnings

• Come on the first Sunday of the month if you want to save the cost of admission. The museum is free on those days, as well as May 18 and November 3 (national Japanese holidays).
