Without a permanent collection of its own, the Hayward Gallery in London instead hosts three to four major special exhibitions every year. In the past, the works of French Impressionists and Leonardo da Vinci have been featured. All styles of visual arts, ranging from all historical periods, are exhibited at "The Hayward," as it is now officially called.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Use London's extensive subway system ("The Underground") to access Southbank Centre. Southbank Centre is a collective arts council that controls the Hayward Gallery in addition to the music and performing arts facilities located in the same complex. Waterloo Station and Embankment Station are the closest subway stops, and London's light rail network also runs by The Hayward. Take a light rail train to Waterloo, Waterloo East or Charing Cross station.
Step2
Hop on a London bus that runs down York Road, Belvedere Road or Stamford Street to get to the Hayward Gallery. You can plan your London public transit journey at the Transport for London's "Journey Planner" website (see Resources below).
Step3
Book ahead. Because of the Hayward Gallery's popularity, it is advisable that visitors secure their tickets in advance. Southbank Centre events can be booked online, by mail, by phone or in person. Visit their bookings page for detailed instructions and specific costs (see Resources below).
Step4
Take advantage of The Hayward's generous visiting hours. Unlike many world-class galleries, the Hayward Gallery remains open 7 days a week, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. On Friday and Saturday evenings, extended hours allow access to the exhibitions until 10 p.m.
Step5
Use a tour guide to tell you more about the featured works of art. Depending on the exhibition, tours may be offered by staff at the Hayward Gallery. Otherwise, organized private tours may be available. Inquire by telephone at the gallery's front desk for further information.
Step6
Stay up to date on happenings at The Hayward. You can link to events at the gallery through the Southbank Centre's official website (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • The museum's ever-changing program of events makes it a must to check ahead and plan your visit.
  • Discounted tickets may be available to large groups planning an excursion. Availability depends on the currently featured exhibition.
