Kickball began as a way for idle soldiers to pass the time, then grew into a beloved children's street game. Today, organized leagues are popular in many states. Kickball is a great casual game for various ages and skill levels. Akin to baseball, the rules are simple, and the game can be played by anyone who can kick a ball and run.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Four base markers
  • At least eight players
  • Inflatable ball round, ideally 10 inches in diameter and rubber

Prepare for Kickball

Step1
Choose a level area of play large enough for fly balls, and a diamond with four bases.
Step2
Mark four bases (one of them "Home") an equal distance apart.
Step3
Divide players into two teams. Decide who will bat first.
Step4
Choose as many of these positions as you have players (in order of importance to the game): pitcher, first baseman, third baseman, second baseman, roaming shortstop, one to three outfielders, team catcher (can make plays at the plate).

Play Kickball

Step1
"Bat" by kicking a ball that the pitcher rolls toward Home plate. A pitch that misses the plate is a ball. A missed kick is a strike. Bat until you connect for a hit or get 3 strikes. Walks (4 balls) are not counted. Alternatively, play a more active game without balls and strikes.
Step2
Run after you kick the ball. If you get to the base before someone tags you out, you are safe and can remain on the base.
Step3
Advance the play by inning as in baseball, until each team gets 3 outs. Highest score at the end of 9 innings wins.
Step4
Know that these rules are intended for casual play. You can find rules for official play at the World Adult Kickball Association website (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • If you play on pavement, use chalk to designate baselines.
