Things You'll Need:
- Dimmer switch
- Wire nuts
- Wire strippers
- Screwdriver
- Electrical tape
- Needlenose pliers
- Voltage tester

Step 1
Turn off the power to the circuit you will be working on.

Unscrew the existing faceplate and light switch.

Pull the switch out of the box before disconnecting anything.

Use a voltage tester to double-check that the circuit is off.

Unscrew the wires from the terminals on the old switch by unscrewing them. Discard the old switch.

Use wire strippers to strip 3/8 of an inch of insulation off the ends of the wires.

Take one stripped wire on the dimmer switch and one from the wall box and, using needlenose pliers or your hands, twist the exposed parts together.

Step 8
Tighten a wire nut over the wires.

Step 9
Repeat the previous steps with the other wires.

Step 10
Wrap electrical tape around the wire nuts on all wires and fold the wires back into the wall box.

Step 11
Mount the dimmer switch by screwing it into place.

Step 12
Screw on the dimmer switch faceplate with the switch in the Off position.

Step 13
Turn the electrical circuit back on and test the dimmer switch to ensure it is working properly.
