Love giving (or getting) massages but hate the messy, sticky massage oils? Massage melts are solid little gems of skin-loving oils that look like small bars of soap but melt when they come in contact with skin. They give you just enough oil to glide over the skin but don’t leave an oily mess. The best part of making these is the cash you save—these babies go for big bucks at specialty soapmaking stores.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 oz. beeswax
  • 1 oz. almond oil
  • 1 oz. cocoa butter
  • Fragrance
  • Muffin tin
  • Garbage bags
  • Glass bowl
  • Plastic wrap or bags
  1. Step 1

First you will need a clean, clutter-free work area. A kitchen table or counter works best.

  2. Step 2

Cover your work area with a garbage bag to protect surfaces and make clean-up quick and easy.

  3. Step 3

Place the beeswax and cocoa butter in a glass bowl and melt in the microwave. Melt in short spurts to ensure you don’t overheat the ingredients. You want them just melted, not boiling.

  4. Step 4

When the two ingredients are melted, add the almond oil and mix well.

  5. Step 5

Add fragrance and coloring (optional) to your massage melts. Add the fragrance one drop at a time until it’s the desired strength. Use essential oils for an added aromatherapy effect. Adding color is really unnecessary, but if you must, only add one or two drops to lightly tint the mixture.

  6. Step 6

Mix the ingredients thoroughly until everything is blended.

  7. Step 7

Pour the mixture into small muffin tins. Don’t make them too thick—you want the massage melts to be easy to handle when massaging. One inch thick is plenty.

  8. Step 8

Allow the melts to cool completely before removing from tins. To easily remove, stick the muffin tin in the freezer for 20 minutes, then tap the melts out onto a towel on the kitchen counter.

  9. Step 9

Wrap the massage melts in food wrap or in a small plastic gift bag. Decorate with a ribbon and a small label so your recipients know what these handmade Christmas gifts are.

Tips & Warnings
  • These little massage melts also make great bath melts. Simply cut off a small chunk and place it in your warm bath water. The melt will dissolve in the water and pamper your skin with softening oils.
