Instructions

    • 1

Determine where the damage is occurring and what the damage is. The two most common problems are water damage and termites.

    • 2

If it's termites, contact a local exterminator. An exterminator can fix the termite problem and hopefully keep them from returning.

    • 3

If it's water damage, Install flashing on the at-risk parts of the roof. Install valley flashing, diverter flashing, rake flashing and kick-out flashing where the roof meets the walls.

    • 4

Caulk the window jamb and sill joint and moldings around windows and doors. This will keep water from leaking in through any holes or gaps that may exist.

    • 5

Install flashing at the sill of the window and on decks. There are flashings that are specially designed for many types of windows.

    • 6

Install flashing around the chimney. Cap flashing, cricket flashing and kick-out flashing all need to be placed around the base of the chimney where the chimney meets the roof.

    • 7

Apply caulk and/or flash on any other remaining trouble spots. Termites may have created a hole in an unusual spot on a wall or there may be a crack due to human damage.

    • 8

Keep a constant eye on the repairs to make sure your handiwork is lasting and to make any emergency repairs when needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • All repairs should be monitored by a professional.

  • Keep records of all repairs and inspections.

  • Take photographs of the damages and repairs for your records.

  • These are only temporary solutions to fix the problem.
