How to Add an Outline to Text in Photoshop

Need text that stands out on a complex background? Outline it in Photoshop.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Photoshop
  1. Step 1

    Open Photoshop and select New from the File menu. Select the Type tool.

  2. Step 2

    Locate the background you want to add text to and click Open.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the background. Type your text.

  4. Step 4

    Choose All from the Select menu to highlight your text. Select your font and size from the drop-down menus in the Type Tool window.

  5. Step 5

    Click on the color box and click on a light color. Click OK twice.

  6. Step 6

    From the Layers menu, select Effects and then Outer Glow. Change Mode to Normal, Opacity to 100, Blur to 3 and Intensity to 600.

  7. Step 7

    Click on the color box and select a dark color. Click OK.

Tips & Warnings
  • Large, bold fonts work best.
  • If your background is dark, choose a light outline color and a dark text color.
