How to Grow Texas Bluebonnet

Long thought of as a wildflower that thrived only in the hill country of the Lone Star State, the Texas bluebonnet does well in many other parts of the country. This annual (grows just one year) likes cool weather - it blooms in mid spring, then fades out.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Choose a site in full sun to light shade with poor to average soil.
Step2
Plant in early spring. Set plants about 1 foot apart.
Step3
Keep soil somewhat moist, although Texas bluebonnets can tolerate light drought.
Step4
Tear out plants when they become faded (when heat sets in). In ideal conditions, they will reseed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sporting deep purple and white spires about 12 inches tall, Texas bluebonnets are wonderful for informal and wildflower plantings.
  • Texas bluebonnets like plenty of space, so plant them at least a foot apart.
  • Texas bluebonnet seeds are poisonous if eaten, so keep them out of the reach of children.
