How to Boot a Surface Tablet in Safe Mode

Running your Windows Surface tablet in safe mode lets you troubleshoot almost all of the problems you can experience with your computer. Safe mode loads only the necessary applications and functionality required to run your machine, which makes it an ideal environment to remove software or viruses that are making it difficult to operate your computer. Even though the Surface tablet runs Windows RT, you can access safe mode the same way you do in Windows 8.

  • Swipe in from the right edge of your Surface tablet to access a Charms bar, then tap "Settings."

  • Tap "Change PC Settings."

  • Tap "General" beneath PC Settings on the left-side of the screen.

  • Tap "Restart Now" beneath Advanced Startup on the right-side of the screen to reboot your Surface tablet to the Choose an Option screen.

  • Tap "Troubleshoot" and then tap "Startup Settings."

  • Tap "Restart" to reboot your computer to the Startup Settings screen.

  • Tap "Safe Mode" to boot your computer in safe mode.
