How to Put a Photo in a Picture Post's Text Box on Tumblr

To put one or more photos in a new or reblogged picture post Text box on Tumblr, you must use an image URL. The problem with publishing photos this way is that an error often occurs if you use a non-Tumblr URL. Instead of the published post automatically displaying the photo, a gray instant film picture icon appears. When clicked, the icon displays three dots or slowly switches to the photo. To put a photo in a Text box without this happening, you need to save it first on Tumblr to generate a Tumblr URL and then add it.

  • Go to your Tumblr dashboard and click “Photo” on the postings header to open the submission screen for posting pictures.

  • Click anywhere in the “Choose Up to 10 Photos” box to access the Open dialog box. Locate the file for a photo, and double-click its name to upload it.

  • Click the down arrow button next to “Publish” at the bottom right corner of the post submission screen. Select “Save as Draft,” and then click the “Save Draft” button.

  • Click “Drafts” on the right sidebar to access the unpublished post and saved photo.

  • Right-click the photo, and select the “Copy Image URL” option to copy the URL where Tumblr stored the photo when you saved the draft.

  • Open a picture post submission screen. To start a post of your own, click the “Photo” icon to open a new picture post submission screen. Repeat Step 2 to add one or more photos to the main section. To reblog a post, click the “Reblog” icon.

  • Add a photo to the Text box. Click inside the Text box, and select the “Insert/Edit Image” icon labeled with a camera and a link.

  • Press “Ctrl-V” to paste the URL you copied into the “Image URL” field. Go to the beginning of the field and delete the number and period that appear before the word “media” in the URL.

  • Add a caption or additional details about the photo to the “Description” area if you desire.

  • Click the “Insert” button to add the image to the Text box, and then enter additional text in the box as needed. If you want to tag the post, add tags to the Tag field. When you’re finished, click the “Publish” or “Reblog Post” button, respectively, to add the picture post to your Tumblr blog.

Tips & Warnings

  • To put a photo published on another Tumblr blog in the Text box of one of your picture posts, acquire the original poster’s permission, right-click the photo, select “Copy Image URL” and then follow the same steps you used to add a personal photo.
  • If you don’t remove the number and period before “media” on a Tumblr URL, Tumblr will publish the gray instant film icon.
  • If you continue to have difficulty with adding a photo to a picture post Text box, check the photo file type and size. Tumblr advises users to upload a photo in BMP, PNG, GIF or JPEG file format. Additionally, a photo must be less than 10MB.
