How to Turbo a KA24DE

Save

The KA24DE engine was produced by Nissan from 1988 to 1996, powering a number of the company's sport cars and trucks. The engine came naturally aspirated from the factory, which means it used its own combustion power to draw air into the cylinders. To increase the power of the KA24DE, you can add a turbocharger from one of many aftermarket retailers. Though not every turbo kit is the same, the basic installation procedures are similar.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set, metric
  • Torque wrench
  • Torque sockets
  • Philips-head screwdriver
  • Fluid catch container
  • Obtain a turbocharger kit from a performance parts manufacturer. There are a number of turbo kits available for the KA24DE; find a kit that suits your budget. The turbo kit should come with the turbocharger, exhaust manifold, downpipe, bigger fuel injectors, an air induction pipe, an air cleaner, oil pressure hoses and the necessary clamps and installation materials.

  • Remove the intake filter box and intake hose connected to the intake manifold of your KA24DE. The filter box is held to the body of the vehicle with two bolts and the hose is held in place with a metal clamp around the throttle body.

  • Remove the three bolts holding the engine's exhaust manifold to the exhaust of the engine. If you have difficulty reaching the bolts from the engine bay, climb under the vehicle. After you're done, remove the seven bolts holding the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head.

  • Disconnect the wiring harness plugs connected to each of the four fuel injectors. Remove the two bolts holding the fuel rail to the injectors and push it a couple of inches out of the way. Gently pry each fuel injector out of the cylinder head.

  • Install the new exhaust manifold to the cylinder head of your KA24DE. Use the new gasket found in your turbo kit, not the old gasket you removed previously. Torque the bolts to the factory specified amount, typically between 40 and 50-ft-lbs of torque. If the bolts are too loose or tight, you could damage the exhaust manifold.

  • Bolt the downpipe in your turbo kit to the exhaust of your vehicle. Do not forget the gasket that fits between the downpipe and the exhaust.

  • Bolt the back of the turbocharger to the downpipe before bolting the turbocharger to the exhaust manifold. Use the included gasket in your kit that fits between the turbocharger and downpipe. The turbocharger typically connects to the downpipe with four bolts. Once the downpipe is connected to the turbocharger, place the gasket that fits between the turbocharger and the exhaust manifold into position. Bolt the turbocharger to the exhaust manifold with the four bolts.

  • Tighten the steel-braided oil pressure line to the oil inlet of your turbocharger. Run the other end of the line to the plug at the lower right side of the engine block. You must remove the plug cap's two bolts before installing the line. Do not bend or warp the gaskets used for the oil pressure line. Doing so could result in significant oil leaks.

  • Connect the air outlet of the turbocharger to the throttle body of the KA24DE using the metal pipes found in your turbo kit. The air outlet of the turbo is the hole found at the bottom. Tighten the metal clamps around the rubber gaskets holding each section of tube together.

  • Install the new fuel injectors to the cylinder head. Connect the fuel rail to the tops of the fuel injectors and bolt the assembly in place. Connect each harness clip from the engine wiring harness in the right order. The clips are numbered according to cylinder.

  • Connect the new air induction pipe and filter to the front of the turbocharger using the clamps provided. Connect the vacuum hose that links the blow-off valve of the turbocharger to the air induction pipe. The blow-off valve looks like a small bell on the front of the turbo charger.

  • Plug the computer control module for the turbocharger into your Nissan's computer, if your turbo kit comes with a module. The computer for your Nissan is under the right side of the dashboard.

Tips & Warnings

  • Follow the directions of your turbo kit if you have any doubts about an installation step.
