How to Replace the Starter on Gas GE Profile Range Top

When you turn on the oven or stove on your GE Profile range, the starter, or igniter, is the component that fires the burners. It is a metal component that doesn't spark but rather generates enough extreme heat to light the flames. If the burners on your GE range aren't firing, it could be the result of a bad starter. These ranges are designed to be opened quickly, so you can replace the starter yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Unplug your GE range and shut off the gas valve at the rear of the unit.

  • Locate the access panel on the bottom of the range. Remove any screws with your Phillips screwdriver.

  • Remove the panel and you will have access to the burner assembly. Notice the starter mounted next to it. It is a rectangular or cylindrical component with wiring connected at the bottom.

  • Unplug the wiring at the base of the starter and remove the screw holding it in place. Remove the starter.

  • Fit a new starter in the assembly and replace the wiring and screw.

  • Replace the front access panel of the range.
