Granite and Corian may look similar but are two very different materials. Granite is a natural stone often used for countertops due to its appealing appearance and durability. Corian is made from a mix of clay, acrylic resin and pigmentation. Corian is durable as well and can be pigmented to strongly resemble granite; however, if either surface cracks, the required repair methods are similar but slightly different. Fixing a cracked granite or Corian countertop helps extend the life of the counter because the repair prevents the crack from spreading.
Things You'll Need
- Mild detergent
- Granite epoxy repair
- Fine sandpaper
- Ammonia-based cleaner
- Blue or gray Corian abrasive pad
- Epoxy filler
Clean the granite with a sponge soaked with warm water and mild detergent to ensure the crack does not contain any dirt or debris that will interfere with the repair. Dry the stone with a towel.
Fill the crack with a granite epoxy repair. Some epoxies are clear and naturally blend in with the surrounding stone; others have colors added so the epoxy matches the granite color as closely as possible. Follow all instructions on the package for best results and remove any excess with a razor before it dries.
Sand the repair with a fine sandpaper to even out the repair and make it even with the surrounding granite. Wipe away any loose sand with a rag.
Clean the Corian with an ammonia-based cleaner prior to repairing. DuPont recommends avoiding glass cleaner because it leaves a residue. Rinse the counter once cleaning is complete and dry the surface with a towel.
Sand down small cracks with a blue or gray abrasive pad that is included in a Corian repair kit. Sand down the crack if it is shallow to make less visible.
Insert an epoxy repair into the Corian crack and wipe away the excess with a razor or rag. Allow the repair to dry.
Tips & Warnings
