DIY Toilet Rough-In
If you want to place a new toilet in a room, you need to install a drain. This part of the project is called the drain or toilet rough-in. It's the step where you plan where the drain will go, and it is important because the drain must be placed a certain distance from the wall. If it's not properly placed, the toilet won't fit. The most complicated part of roughing in the toilet is planning out your space so there is enough room behind, in front of and beside the toilet. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure out from the back wall 12 inches and draw a line here with a pencil and ruler. Measure out from the side wall 15 inches and make another line to create two intersecting lines. This gives you 12 inches behind and 15 inches to the side of the toilet. The resulting center point is the center of the drain hole.
-
2
Set the toilet flange, the base of the drain pipe, on the mark. Trace around the flange pipe with a pencil on the floor and cut along this line to create a drain hole using a jig saw. Insert the flange drain pipe into the hole.

Measure and cut 3-inch drainage pipe to extend to the home's main drain line, called the stack, with a hack saw. At the stack, cut out a section to allow a t-fitting to fit into the stack where the new drain line intersects with it.

4
Insert the t-fitting between the two new sections of the drain stack. Connect the joining sections of the new drain line to the t-fitting. When all sections are properly fit, remove them all, add PVC cement to the ends of the pipes and fit them back together one at a time. Let the cement dry for up to 12 hours.
