Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard cake round

  • Cake decorating turntable

  • Rounded wooden dowel rod

There are a minimum of 300 dimples on a golf ball, which should be replicated on a golf ball cake.

Themed birthday cakes add flair to any celebration. For a sports enthusiast, a sports-themed birthday cake can make his celebration much more memorable. Ball-shaped cakes, such as a baseball, football or golf ball cake, are constructed by baking two cakes, using a serrated knife to shape the edges, and assembling the cake. Once frosted, adding dimples to the surface of the cake will add to the realistic look of the cake.

Step 2

Use a rounded piece of wood, such as a dowel rod, to make the dimples in the cake. Start at the top of the cake and press lightly, making an indentation about 1/4-inch deep into the frosting.

Step 3

Move the dowel rod about 1/2-inch below the first indent and make another indent. Place indents in a circle, spaced the same distance away, around the first indent.

Step 4

Place another circular row around the second row you created in Step 3.

Step 5

Continue in the same manner until the visible surface of the cake is covered in dimples.
