How to Switch From Tank Water to Hydrant Water

Many RV parks offer hydrant water and sewer hookups.

Motorhomes and recreational vehicles have water tanks so occupants can access potable water while they are camping. In many cases, campgrounds offer hydrant water at each camping spot. Connecting your RV to hydrant water allows you to have a constant supply of clean water for drinking, showering, washing dishes and cooking. The hydrant is connected to the motorhome or RV with a special type of hose made for transporting clean water, sometimes called a drinking water hose. This ensures the water is clean and safe when it comes from the taps in your RV.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the hydrant and check the water clarity. There are some places that, even with a filter, you will not want to drink the hydrant water. Turn off the hydrant, and clean the hookup with household disinfectant or a bleach wipe.

    • 2

Align the water pressure regulator and turn it toward the right to attach it to the hydrant. If you do not have a water pressure regulator, this step can be skipped, but be aware that your RV's plumbing can be damaged by surges in water pressure. Place the water filter over the regulator, or over the hydrant spout if a regulator is not being used. Some filters screw into place and some are simply held in place by the hose connection.

    • 3

Screw the clean water hose onto the connection. Turn on the water and run it for several minutes to rinse out the hose and remove all air. Turn off the water.

    • 4

Locate the clean water hookup on the RV and screw the hose to the nozzle. The hookup is usually located near the sewage tanks, and is typically clearly marked as the clean water hookup.

    • 5

Turn the water back on. You now have hydrant water service to your RV.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can store your clean water hose with the ends connected to prevent contamination.

  • Hook up the electricity before the water to ensure your hands and the ground are dry.
