How to Make Diagonal Dashed Lines on Adobe Illustrator

Draw plain diagonal lines in Adobe Illustrator and transform them into dashed lines. These transformed diagonal lines will then feature dashes that you can edit and refine. Consider making your line's dashes more visible by adding space in between them or define settings that will make the dashes less noticeable. Setting the length of the gap between dashes, as well as the shape of the dashes, allows you to customize the look of dashed line.

  • Choose the Line Segment tool as your drawing instrument.

  • Double-click the Stroke button to select the line's stroke color from within the Color Picker.

  • Identify where you want a diagonal line to begin.

  • Click the Line Segment tool and drag until you reach the place where the diagonal line should end. Hold the Shift key as you draw and constrain the line to diagonal multiples of 45 degrees.

  • Select "Window" and "Stroke" to view the Stroke panel.

  • Reselect the line you drew with the Selection tool, if necessary.

  • Type the desired width for the diagonal line in the Stroke panel's Weight field.

  • Check the Dashed Line box within the Stroke panel.

  • Enter numerical values to establish the diagonal line's dash sequence or space between dashes. Type five into the Dash box and seven into the Gap box, for example. These numbers control how your dashed line will look so customize these settings according to your own preferences.

  • Select "Show Options" to view the Stroke panel's end cap style options. Then click a dash end style such as Butt Cap, Round Cap or Projecting Cap to create a dashed line that has rounded or squared dash edges.
