If you want a cheap craft project that can keep kids busy for a while, considering having them make a yarn ball using a balloon. The finish project is a toy that each child gets to keep. A yarn ball is very light and can be made with a variety of colored string. Additionally, a yarn ball is particularly good for young children playing indoors. Making a craft yarn ball with a balloon is best suited for older children.
Things You'll Need
- Round balloons
Make wheat paste. Mix 2 parts flour with 3 parts water in a large pot. Heat on medium high and whisk the mixture occasionally. Once the lumps have disappeared, remove the pan from the heat and allow the paste to cool.
Blow up a balloon to the appropriate size for the yarn balls. You can make the yarn balls as large or small as you wish.
Dip the yarn into the cooled wheat paste. Wrap the yarn around the entire balloon. Go around in many different directions until the balloon is well covered in yarn. If you wish to see through the yarn ball, leave gaps between each row of yarn.
Allow the yarn to dry completely for 24 hours.
Pop the balloon with a needle to create a see-through yarn ball.
Tips & Warnings
- Use different colors of yarn or add paint and glitter to make the balls more exciting.
- Avoid getting the yarn balls wet. They will fall apart if exposed to water.
