How to Make Leather Baby Moccasins

Leather baby moccasins and other soft sole shoes are recommended by podiatrists and pediatricians because of the way they allow freedom for foot movement and growth. Toddlers who use the shoes benefit because they build foot and ankle muscles naturally without having to conform to rigid shoes. Make leather baby moccasins using soft leather scraps and a pattern you can download online.

Things You'll Need

  • Leather shoe pattern
  • Scrap leather
  • Needle and thread or sewing machine
  • 1/4 inch wide elastic
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Paper clips
  • Trace the pattern pieces onto your leather scraps using a pen. Cut along the tracings.

  • Cut out an extra top pattern piece to act as the lining; make sure the suede or back side of the shiny leather touches your child's foot since it is softest.

  • Sew the leather top piece and the lining together by turning the pieces of leather right side out and running a seam across the top edge.

  • Sew the casing piece from the pattern onto the top of the heel for extra padding.

  • Clip the sole piece to the top piece with paper clips. Sew the pieces together, then clip and sew the heel to the shoe.

  • Reinforce all the seams of the shoe by adding an extra row of stitching.

  • Cut a slit in the lining piece that goes around the baby's ankle, then insert the elastic band. Sew the band together and sew it in the lining.
