How to Make a Kitty Ears Headband With Pipe Cleaners

Cats are playful creatures, and an ideal costume choice for children of all ages. With the addition of some ears and a tail, anyone can transform into a feisty feline. Pipe cleaners offer affordability and ease for creating homemade kitty ears. This project also allows you to choose the color and size of the headband. Adults and children can both participate in making and wearing these kitty ears headbands.

Things You'll Need

  • Swatch of cotton cloth
  • Scissors
  • 4 to 6 pipe cleaners
  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing notions
  • Hot glue gun
  • Lay a piece of cotton cloth on a table. Black or a cheetah pattern are both great options for creating the cat look. Cut out four matching triangles measuring about 3 inches on each side. Place one triangle face up on a table. Place a second triangle on top of the first triangle with the right side facing down. Sew along two of the three edges using a 3/8-inch seam allowance on your sewing machine. Turn right side out. Repeat with the remaining two triangles.

  • Bend a pipe cleaner in half and push the folded end into the tip of the cloth triangle pouch. Repeat with the second cloth triangle and another pipe cleaner. These two pouches will be the kitty ears.

  • Wrap about an inch on the ends of two pipe cleaners around each other to connect them. Connect the remaining two free ends by twisting them around each other like you did with the first two pipe cleaner ends. You should now have a large circle made from two connected pipe cleaners. Squish the circle in half so that it is shaped like a banana. Bend the banana shape into a half moon shape to sit comfortably on your head.

  • Place a kitty ear triangle on the top of the pipe cleaner headband. Wrap the extra pipe cleaner length hanging outside of the kitty ear triangle around the body of the headband to secure the ear in place. Repeat with the second triangle about 3 or 4 inches away from the first ear. Make sure that both ears sit symmetrically on the headband.

  • Turn on your hot glue gun and allow it to heat up. Place a pea-sized amount of glue at the base corners of each kitty ear just underneath the cloth pouch. This glue will keep the cloth in place and secure the wrapped pipe cleaners.
