How to Change the Heat Sensor on a GE Oven

If your Genera Electric oven is not heating to the proper temperature, the first thing to check is the oven heat sensor. The oven heat sensor is located in the oven compartment, and is responsible for monitoring the internal temperature of the oven. The reading is used by the electronic oven control to display the internal temperature, indicate when the oven has preheated and adjust the heating elements as need. If the oven sensor is found to be bad, you must install a new one to restore your oven. Does this Spark an idea?

    • 3

Locate the oven sensor, which is located between the two sides of the broil element near the top of the range.

    • 4

Remove the two screws securing the oven sensor to the range.

    • 5

Pull the oven sensor gently away from the rear wall of the oven, and then disconnect the wire harness to remove.

    • 6

Connect the new oven sensor's wire harness to the range wire harness, and then tuck the harnesses and wires into the rear of the range.

    • 7

Secure the new oven sensor to the rear wall of the range using the screws that were removed from the old sensor.

    • 8

Replace the oven racks, and then restore the range's power supply.

Tips & Warnings

  • To test the oven sensor after it is removed, use a multimeter. Follow the meter's instruction manual to set it to the lowest setting of Ohms of resistance and then calibrate the meter. Touch one probe to one of the sensor terminals, and then touch the other terminal with the other probe. Look at the display on the multimeter. A properly functioning sensor has a resistance of 1,000 to 1,100 Ohms of resistance.
