How to Bypass the Electric Ignitor on a Gas Stove
Many people prefer cooking on gas stoves because the heat can be regulated more evenly. Most gas stoves built since the 1980s consist of an electronic ignitor. The ignitor lights the pilot light when the stove's controls are engaged. This saves gas because the pilot light is not burning all time as it did in older models. However, you may wish to bypass the electronic ignitor. You can bypass the ignitor in your gas stove by following a straightforward procedure.
Step 1
Unplug the stove's electrical cord from the wall outlet or turn off the circuit breaker that supplies it with power. The electronic ignitor needs electricity to operate.
Step 2
Remove the burner grates and lift the stove top if you wish to use a burner. Locate the pilot light for the burner you wish to use and turn on the knob. Hold the flame from a barbecue lighter by the pilot light until it lights. It should light within 5 or 6 seconds.
Step 3
Open the oven door and remove the racks if you wish to use the oven. Remove the screws that secure the oven floor plate using a Phillips screwdriver. Locate the pilot light and hold the flame from a barbecue lighter by the pilot light until it lights. Replace the floor plate and re-secure the screws.
