How to Walk Downhill on Snowshoes

Descending hills on snowshoes is the most exciting aspect of snowshoeing.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Hats
  • Warm Clothes
  • Ski Gloves
  • Ski Poles
  • Snowshoes
  1. Step 1

    Plant a pole downhill and to the side as a balance aid.

  2. Step 2

    Alternate pole plants. When you step with your right foot, plant your left pole, and when you step with your left foot, plant your right pole.

  3. Step 3

    Lift your foot with the toe pointed up so that the snowshoe is level with the horizon.

  4. Step 4

    Lean back slightly into the hill.

  5. Step 5

    Take a large stride.

  6. Step 6

    Plant your foot heel-first, sinking into the snow.

Tips & Warnings
  • When walking downhill, be sure to lift the toe and have the snowshoe level with the horizon, not level with the slope.
  • Try sliding downhill for a thrill. Lean way back on your heels, forcing the front of the snowshoe up, and let gravity take you for a ride.
