DIY Racing Office Chair

Boring office chairs can lead to a monotonous work day.

Nothing says "gearhead" quite like having your own racing seat for your office. Rather than buying one from a specialty retailer, though, you can build one of your own with parts from an old office chair and a racing seat purchased from a performance parts distributor. The process isn't difficult, and shouldn't take more than an hour or two to accomplish.

Things You'll Need

• Padded racing bucket seat
• Socket wrench
• Electric drill
• Drill bits
• Pencil
• Unused office chair with good casters

Instructions

1. Turn the old office chair upside down so that you can access the steel plate that attaches the upholstered seat to the shock mechanism and controls.

2. Remove the upholstered portion of the seat from the pedestal with a socket wrench. There are four bolts that hold the seat in place.

3. Position the mounting plate for the pedestal against the bottom surface of the racing seat so that it is roughly centered between the two sides of the seat, but positioned approximately 2 inches back from the exact center of the seat. Mark the position of the mounting holes against the racing seat bottom with the pencil.

4. Peel back the upholstery of the racing seat so that you can drill through the base plate without damaging the seat cushion.

5. Drill through the base of the racing seat with the electric drill and a drill bit that is the same size as the bolts you will be using to attach the pedestal to the seat.

6. Run a bolt through the top of the seat and down through the holes in the pedestal's mounting plate. Install a washer and a nut onto each of the bolts, and then tighten them with the socket wrench. When this is complete, place the upholstery back onto the seat bucket to complete the construction of your racing office chair.
