Snarls or tangles often indicate damaged hair, so handle this problem with the greatest degree of delicacy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Conditioner Or Hand Lotion
  • Wide-toothed Comb
  1. Step 1

Apply hair conditioner or hand lotion to the fingers of one hand.

  2. Step 2

Hold the tangle in the hand that does not have lotion on it. You will use the other hand to work out the snarl gently.

  3. Step 3

Comb your fingers through the snarl. Begin at the bottom of the snarl and work toward the scalp.

  4. Step 4

For really bad snarls, wet the hair and apply conditioner. Leave the conditioner in the hair while you finger-brush it.

  5. Step 5

Gently comb out the hair with a wide-toothed comb to prevent more snarls from developing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Holding the tangle in one hand while you finger-brush protects the scalp and hair roots from tugging.

on 3/2/2007 Never underestimate the power of a good cut, to begin with. My daughter has lovely long locks, and my stylist cut layers on the underside of her hair, where the "rats' nests" grow. She gets to keep the length, and we have many fewer tears.

on 1/30/2006 Try using a hair detangling spray, such as Suave Kids Detangling Spray. It doesn't have a strong smell and it really does work. Just spray about 3 inches from the snarl and brush it through. It works like a charm.

on 11/22/2005 If I have a snarl in my hair, I simply take a pair of scissors and trim it off as close as I can to the point where it snarls. The snarls are rarely anything major, usually just 3 or 4 hair strands that have become knotted up. Cutting it off is so much easier. I only cut off a snarl if it proves impossible to remove by brushing or finger work.

on 11/22/2005 If your hair tangles a lot, find a good conditioner. The shampoo can be any brand, but find one that has a detangler in it. Use plenty of it in the back of your hair. Leave-in conditioners also work. I tend to have terrible tangles after swimming. I rub a bit of conditioner in my hair before I hit the shower, and a lot of the knots fall out when I rinse it out. Shampoo and condition as normal (after you rinse the first conditioning out your hair).

on 11/22/2005 Mayonnaise helps untangle hair knots. Dip your fingers into a jar of mayonnaise, then spread the mayonnaise gently around the hair knot. Using a wide-tooth comb, carefully brush the knot out of your hair.
