Complex bongo drums require a great deal of skill to construct.

Drums play a major role in contempoary music. They create a rhythmic structure for a song. Bongo drums have played this role since the 1800s, according to KidsWorld, an Internet resource for kids' crafts. Enjoyed throughout Africa, Cuba and in modern songs like "Everyday is a Winding Road," by Sheryl Crow, bongos are traditionally open-ended drums made from animal skins. You can create a simple bongo drum with a few materials found around the house.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the lid off of your cylindrical carton. Poke a hole in two opposite sides of the carton (not the bottom), using your screwdriver.

    • 2

Paint the surface of the carton using geometric patterns. Allow it to dry.

    • 3

Tie your piece of thin rope at one end. Insert it into one of the holes in your container, going from inside the container to the outside.

    • 4

Place the drum near your belly button and stretch the rope from where it attaches to the carton behind your neck and back to the other side of the carton. Hold the rope at this point.

    • 5

Cut the loose end of the rope about 4 inches below where you are holding it.

    • 6

Pull the loose end of the rope through the empty hole in the carton, going from the outside in. Tie a knot to keep the rope from slipping out of the hole.

    • 7

Place the lid back on top of your cylindrical container.

Tips & Warnings

  • For your cylindrical carton, use a coffee or oatmeal container, or any other cylinder you can find, such as a Pringles container.

  • Wear gloves and ask an adult to help you when you poke holes in the sides of your carton, in order to keep yourself from getting hurt.
