Cut a head of lettuce to make a fresh tossed salad.

The healthy, green and leafy vegetable known as lettuce is used in many ways in a variety of dishes. Perhaps the most popular amongst these is salad. Although it is easy to grab a bag of pre-cut packaged greens at your local grocery store, cutting a head of crisp lettuce on your own yields the freshest salad possible and is less likely to result in wilted or discolored greens when eaten right away. Simply toss with your favorite toppings and dressing for a satisfying homemade salad.

Step 2

Bring the head down sharply on a hard surface to loosen the core.

Step 3

Twist out the core and remove it from the head.

Step 4

Wash the head of lettuce under cold water, and remove excessive moisture by using a salad spinner or patting dry with paper towels.

Step 5

Slice the head in half, and chop the lettuce into bite-sized pieces.

Tip

Stainless steel knives work the best because they will not discolor the lettuce or change the taste. You may also prepare a salad by tearing the lettuce with your own hands as opposed to cutting it.
