How to Install a Boise Air Conditioning System's Filter

An air conditioner system's filter is an important component in the system's operation. The filter prevents impurities such as dirt, dust, pollen and other debris from entering into the air conditioner ventilation. The air conditioner filter is made up of elongated fibers that trap and hold the impurities until the filter is ready to be replaced. There are various types of air conditioner filters but there are only two main locations for the filter. The air filter can be found behind the main access panel or inside the entrance of the air conditioner system's duct work. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the access panel to the air conditioner system inside of the home. Pull the locking clips back to unlock the access panel. Pull the panel off of the front of the air conditioner and place it to the side.

    • 2

Inspect the area behind the access panel for the square air filter. Once the panel is removed, the air filter will be visible if it is behind the panel. If the air filter is not behind the panel, look inside the entrance of the duct work where the duct leaves the air conditioner system. Use a flashlight, if necessary.

    • 3

Pull the air filter out of the duct or out from behind the access panel. If using a cut-to-fit air filter, measure the width and length of the old air filter and cut the new filter to the same measurements.

    • 4

Position the new filter behind the access panel or into the entrance of the duct with the air flow arrows on the air filter pointing in the proper direction. If the air filter is behind the access panel, ensure that the arrows are pointing toward the air conditioner system. If the air filter is inside of the entrance of the duct, ensure that the arrows are pointing away from the air conditioner system and toward the duct work.

    • 5

Place the access panel back onto the front of the air conditioner system and lock it in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • The main filters to use for an air conditioner system are pre-cut filters, cut-to-fit filters and HEPA filters for people who have allergies.

  • Do not install the air filter backwards or it will restrict the air flow through the air conditioner system and could cause serious problems within the system.
