How to Make a Black Cape for Children

Ancient vampires, witches, wizards and some strange characters have one thing in common: they all wear black capes. Making a small cape for your child is very simple. It can be used for a multitude of Halloween costumes or theater accessories. Using this simple pattern, you can also change the color and add a logo to make your child his very own superhero cape. You can also double or triple the dimensions to make a matching adult black cape.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a simple pattern on pattern paper. Trace a trapezoid measuring 20.5 inches at the top, 30.5 inches at the bottom with a 26-inch height. Cut the shape of the cape from the pattern paper.

    • 2

Pin your pattern to your fabric. Trace the edges of your pattern with a chalk before removing the paper and cutting the fabric or cut the fabric following the edges of the pattern without removing it.

    • 3

Fold and press a 1/4 inch of the fabric along all the edges of the cape to make the wrong sides face each other. Repeat on the bottom and side edges of your cape. Sew the bottom and side's hems in place with a straight stitch. Make a backstitch at the start and end of each side to secure in place.

    • 4

Fold and press a 1/2 inch of fabric at the top of your cape. Sew in place along the bottom and top edge of the fold, allowing for an open space through which to pass the ribbon.

    • 5

Pass the ribbon through the top of the cap and use the ribbon to secure around your child's neck with a loose bow.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use fusible tape along the edges to make them more sturdy if you expect your black cape to be used multiple times.

  • Change the fabric color and add an appliqué to make a super hero cape. Use your child's first name letter as inspiration for his hero name and for your appliqué design.
