How to Decoupage With Glue
Decoupage is the creative and crafty art of cutting out fabric or paper pieces or scraps and reassembling them on a surface in a decorative way. Decoupage can be done with expensive kits, gels or pastes; however, it doesn't have to be a high-cost hobby. You can undertake this craft for very little cost by using a mixture of simple white school glue and water. If you are just trying out this new craft, this is a low-cost way to see if this hobby is for you.

1
Mix 4 tbsp. white household glue and 1 tbsp. warm water in your clean jar. Put on the lid and shake until the ingredients are mixed well. If you are decoupaging a large item, you may want to mix more; do so, keeping the proportions equal to 4 parts glue to 1 part warm water.

2
Cut out fabric or paper shapes, letters or scraps to decoupage. Place them on the item on which you will be decoupaging them to ensure you have enough items and to loosely establish a layout. Continue cutting out until you have plenty of items to cover the item the way you want it covered.

3
Cover the item you are decoupaging with a thin area of glue mixture, using the paintbrush; if you are only covering a small area of the item, just cover the small area with a thin layer of glue. Place a thin layer of glue on the back of the paper or fabric you are placing on the item.

4
Smooth the fabric or paper onto your item slowly, removing any air bubbles with your hands. Brush a layer of the glue mixture on top of the fabric or paper to fully secure it to the item. Continue in this manner until all of the items are secured to the item.

5
Let the glue dry. Brush a final layer of the glue mixture onto the entire item to provide a uniform, shiny finish. Let dry and apply more layers of glue if necessary until you have the level of shine you want.
