Every modern building has a water meter that monitors the amount of water passing into the structure. The amount, or flow, of the water and the meter size work hand-in-hand to accurately bill a water customer.
Water meters measure flow rates of water entering a building. The flow rate is determined by averaging the lowest and highest rates of water passing through a given water meter.
Once the flow rate is determined, a sufficiently sized water meter can be installed. If the water meter is too small for the flow, the internal parts can wear down quickly, causing inaccurate calculations; an oversize meter can lead to inaccurate readings from too low of a flow rate compared to the larger-size meter.
Water meter sizes are typically in inches, based on the size of the inlet. For example, if the flow rate is found to be 28 gallons per minute, a 0.75 inch meter would supply the correct readings and flow allowances.
